January / February 2010 issue - first thoughts

I’ve been gone from here for essentially the last couple months. Subscription ran out with the October issue, and sadly, I decided not to renew. Not sure why, other than I was getting tired of being disappointed. The rehashed pictorials, the shorter playmate stories, the double issue. And, perhaps most symbolically of all that’s gone wrong with the magazine this decade – the removal of the PMOY from the cover. As I think I said back in 2003 – if Playboy doesn’t care enough about the PMOY to put her on the cover, than why should I care about the PMOY?

Well I thought I’d give the magazine another shot, so bought Jan/Feb at the newsstand tonight. I don’t like the double isue, but at least there’d be two centerfolds. Sadly, from the briefest of glances, I’m disappointed again.

The back to back centerfold is just terrible. Would it really have killed them to have two totally separate features, with two totally separate foldouts? Thought that was one of the points of getting rid of the staples – the added flexibility that it would provide in layout of the magazine. Is the heavier weight of the gatefold paper really that much more expensive? The girls themselves are attractive – they deserve their own individual features, with all the requisite pages, not being shortchanged like they are.

I always used to look forward to the Playmate Review. Now, year after year, a lack of original photos. I flipped by and saw the 60s pictorial, and was disappointed that it was no different than any other retread pictorial lately. No creativity, just cost-cutting. Tara Reid also did nothing for me. And the cover is just bad, especially for one that will be hanging around for two months. No creativity, no sexiness. Just blank eyed staring in an awkward pose.

Then just flipping thru the letters, I saw mention of Kelley Thompson being all natural. Really? Playboy gave me a free-month’s subscription to the cyber club the other month for pointing out some error to them (Yay for good customer service!!), but when I saw her video, I was pretty sure I saw some obvious implant scars. Guess I could be wrong, but I doubt it. I still think Kelley is damn cute and very GND. But printing letters that I think have obvious misinformation in them, and not correcting the mistakes, just bugs the editor in me.

I’m sure I’ll actually read the magazine in the days to come. Hopefully in the whole it’s better than the sum of its parts. But will I subscribe again? Probably not based on this issue. Bummer.

Retrospective Playmate Ranking of the 2000s

I am only doing a Top 5 of each year, there is a lot of ties on the 5 spot because I thought many of them are equally worthy of a top 5 spot. I also have in parenthesis my top 20 of the decade. This is a very important decade to me, because it is the one I really started collecting and following Playboy. A lot of you have Sandra Hubby fairly low in 2004, but she is one of my top 5 of the decade and I consider her a Marissa Miller lookalike when she first pose. I think Alison Waite, Nicole Voss, and Lauren Michelle Hill are a close 1,2, and 3 respectively.

I also ranked the years and the qualities of Playmates. I ranked 2001 my top year because there is 4 top 20s but 2006 is a close second with both 1 and 2 in that same year. I like 2004, 2007, and 2009 equally. I think 2009 is a fairly good year, giving us at least 4 memorable Playmates. I thought 2008 was also a decent year with the likes of Regina Deutinger, Kelly Carrington, and AJ Alexander all very memorable. 2002 and 2003 were the dark years, they did have decent girls like Lauren Anderson and Marketa Janska, but they don’t rank as high on my list. I give Marketa a tie for 20, just so 2003 would have someone ranked.

Also, Sara Jean Underwood was once very high on my list, but recently has dropped a lot for some reason. Still a very sweet girl in my book, but I think her fall is because I really like Alison, Nicole, and Jordan to be PMOY and I thought she robbed them of the title. Maybe it’s just the mood I’m in when I wrote this, but SJU probably broke all my Top 5 about two years ago.

The only PMOYs that made my top 20 is Jayde Nicole at 13 and Kara Monaco at 14. Go figure.

Retrospective Playmate Ranking - 2009

This is my ranking and I’m sticking with it. In my book, Dasha was a poor choice for 50th Anniversary Playmate, as I ranked her below the Shannon twins. The Shannon twins are tied in my book, but since Karissa was July, I’ll give Kristina the higher spot. I think Hope is this year’s best so I gave her the top spot but I don’t think she needs the PMOY title, she already has a lot going on for her. So my personal choice for PMOY is Kelley, I met her in person at GC and she was very nice and personable and I think she would be a good pick. I like Jessica a lot, but I don’t think she’ll get it due to her relation with Playboy as of late. I would be delighted if Kim Phillips or Lindsay Evans gets it, but anyone below that is a bit disappointing.

I think Crystal Harris is the odds on favorite since she is Hef’s bottom bitch, but I think the sleeper choice is Crystal McCahill due to her good relation with Playboy and her mother being a former girlfriend of Hef. But of all the Playmates, other than the twins, I personally dislike Cyrstal McCahill the most, it just seems like she would be the least friendly to meet in person. I could be wrong though.

Glamourcon 48 Recap Expand

I just wanted to thank John and FobPro for posting the Glamourcon pics. It is nice to see all the Playmates and models on there. I like to say that most of the shots he took were fairly good. However, I don’t want to be a critic or sound like a jackass, but I thought the closeup approach were not really flattering for a few of the Playmates. I thought he did a great job with Michelle McLaughlin in the blue dress on Saturday, but it didn’t do Grace Kim, Kelley Thompson, and especially Heather Rene Smith who was sick justice on Sunday with the closeup shoot. Maybe this is just me, but I always love a full length shot, especially if they are wearing a nice dress and you could see their sexy legs. Both Grace Kim and Kelley Thompson wore a cute outfit on Sunday and I thought they were the best looking at the show. SE Playboy models Amanda Corey and Sara Stokes also had very hot outfits both on Saturday and Sunday and a full length shot would have emphasize how amazing they looked. I explained that I always I liked Hairballs pictures because his are always full body shots.

I’m not a professional photographer and I have little experience, I just want to point out what I like. Here is an example of a picture I took of the lovely Alison Waite http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o29/uclafan23/AlisonWaite3.jpg (I thought I didn’t do the beautiful Miss Waite justice either, the angel was a little off), but I like that I got a full length of her body.

By the way, I wanted to ask who stayed at the Hilton on either night of Glamourcon this time? I know times are tough and we could ill afford to pay for a room, but I just wanted to know if it was worth it, especially with the free admission. I wanted to thank Bob and his associates for being this event together, he’s done a great job time after time. We just can’t appreciate him enough for envisioning an event like Glamourcon.

I also want to thank the lovely and stunningly ageless beauty Deanna Brooks for being such a darling at these events. She is so friendly and down to earth in person, and thank you for taking time in going on PML to write us a response about the show. I think it is safe for me to speak on behalf of most of everyone on this Group that Deanna will always remain a fan favorite.

GC 48 (long)

Man, I had no idea how much it could suck being unemployed and having this kind of hobby (autograph collecting). I’d say I missed about half of the show’s attendees because of that, I just couldn’t get as much stuff.

One of the first Playmates I went to was India Allen. Hadn’t seen her in a while and she’s one of my favorites. I almost walked right past her because of her red hair. In my ignorance I thought it was a bad dye job but she said the blond/darker look in her Playboy pictorials *was* the dye job, her hair is naturally that light red color. She had sold the last one of her pictures that showed how much hair she lost from always dying it. Playboy’s decision, not hers. Apparently it’s more damaging for redheads to dye their hair like that. She looked good but aging (PMOY in ‘88, not a shock) but she’s still fantastic. And tall!

The theme seemed to be $20 for anything this time. I went to see Cheryl Bachman, another favorite. I wanted to get a few things but $20 for each signature, I could only get the Playmate Book signed. She looked fantastic, incredible legs and butt, her husband/boyfriend with her seemed very supportive and cool vs. creepy. I asked why she never really did much modeling after Playboy and she said she had owned/run a club in Miami for 12 years. She’s 40? I almost couldn’t tell.

Next was Stacy Arthur. $20 and no pics! Ok, this was getting weird. She looked good but obviously leaving modeling behind. She said she decided to do GC because she signed stuff for O’Neill in the past and he kept encouraging her to attend. I would encourage O’Neill to not bring models who will charge so much *and* refuse candid photos. Stacy had a very good reason for never doing autograph shows in the past, though. Her husband was killed by a stalker, I told her I was surprised she showed up at all after that, even this long after the tragedy. She was very sweet, she may do other GCs. I hope with a more fan-friendly attitude.

Maybe the most disappointing moment in my poor state was Karen Velez. She was one of my all-time faves. Therefore she was also charging $20 for each thing (that’s how my luck functions). I had 4 that I wanted signed but I couldn’t justify that, ended up with just the Playmate Book again. And, again, no pics. She said she’d been spending the years raising a family. Which included her stunning daughter Nikki. Wow, I thought she was really pretty in the CyberClub pics but she looked even better in person. Wish I could show somebody, but *she* refused pictures taken of her as well. What. The. Fuck.

I couldn’t take it anymore, ignored Sandra Theodore altogether. I went to the Main Squeeze Boas area. Aaaaaaah, that was more like it. Playmates who were *not* attempting to drive away all their business. Playmates laughing! And that’s *with* Doug hanging around wearing all black and looking stoic. Who knew.

Kara Monaco was sporting a short haircut and she look spectacular. Hair that short only really works on women who are legitimately pretty because there’s not enough hair to hide anything weird going on with the sides of the face or the jaw. She said she’s been doing a lot of modeling, not really Playboy/nude but stuff like she just did something for Sketchers, it should probably appear in magazines and probably in Sketchers stores, too. She also talked about the red wig she wore in the video game commercial with Hefner and all the Playmates (and his girlfriends)

. They didn’t let her keep the wig. I didn’t know she had extensions in her centerfold pic (to make her fine hair more full). I like her hair as is.

Tiffany Selby was next to her and also had similar short blonde hair, it’s been that way for around a year now. They looked like sisters. Really hot sisters. Anyway, she said she also has been doing a lot of modeling (no acting) but she is also doing makeup for models now.

I didn’t really get to talk to Deanna Brooks (she was very popular and busy both days) but she looked *amazing*! She is a prime example of someone who is legitimately pretty. She posed in ‘98 but looks like it was last year. Very slim but still curvy, great smile, friendly with fans. She should run a clinic for Playmates who attend autograph shows.

I didn’t get to talk to Grace Kim much, either. It seems that many of the fans who went to her were like me, wanting to see her when she was feeling better. Last time she was a trooper for showing up but was really under the weather, this time she looked great, cute dress on.

It was Heather Rene Smith’s turn to be sick. Good of her to show up as listed but I think she would have done herself a big favor by staying in bed. She (and Grace) had some great photos that they took with one of the Main Squeeze Boas snakes. I hope they do some more photoshoots like that, the pics were unique and well done.

Penelope Jimenez was back, she looked really good. She said she is still doing daycare (5-year-olds), going on three years now. It looks like she really enjoys it, has something like 30 kids now and like 4 people working for her. That would be a nice way ruin a kid’s expectations, haahaaha. Aren’t *all* my teachers supposed to be beautiful?

Vanessa Gleason had on a cute short dress and had her hair in pigtails which made her look very much like an indian squaw. She had some great new 8×10s of her wearing some sort of plaid underwear set, she said they were from her pictorial era. I love how she sometimes looks hispanic, sometimes white, sometimes… something else. She’s like another Brandi Brandt.

Christine Smith (Sun. only) is one of my favorites but that $20 pic thing stopped me from buying anything this time. She had her hair done in long curls, looked amazing. She was going around getting various Playmates to give her autographed pics for an auction she was participating in, a celeb auction to raise money for an orphanage in India. I hope she raises a lot of money.

Kimberly Phillips showed up on Sunday as well apparently because of Christine. And charged the same. I got her issue signed. In person she doesn’t look quite as much like AJ Alexander’s sister as she did in her pictorial. Still beautiful, though. She said she’s looking forward to doing more work with Playboy, she was a pre-school teacher but probably is done with that, want’s finish school. Can you imagine having Penelope followed by Kimberly as your teachers? Not fair. She wants to try acting, was very nice.

Kelley Thompson was the surprise of the show for me. I thought she looked really good in her pictorial, roundish features, but damn, in person she is unbelievable! She’s so pretty (wore a hot pencil skirt outfit) and nice. She wants to do more modeling and try acting. I told her she should definitely try acting, she has a look that work work well as a French or Eastern European character.

Speaking of French (Canadian), Sylvie Garant (Gauraan’) stunned me. I remember her being (to me) middle of the road for her year but in person she was so wonderful I found myself talking to her for like 15 minutes. She said she’d modeled before Playboy and started up again about a year after her pictorial, never dealt with the stigma that many Playmates deal with (she did work for Sears catalog, nobody cared she’d posed nude), did modeling for Buick, quit at 30. Such a beautiful face, wonderful smile, a true beauty. We talked about how many young, beautiful women wear too much makeup and end up looking less stunning than if they ramped it back. I hope she does another GC.

Patti McGuire was a joy as well. Of course the $25 dollar deal hurt but she was great to talk to. She said she spent most of the years raising a family (her daughter was there, pretty in a Tiffany way) and, for the last 4 years, been doing ballroom dancing, including competitions. At the behest of her instructor. She has yet to talk to Barbara Moore to compare notes, though. We talked about the ridiculousness of the judging on “Dancing With The Stars”. Crappy dancers should lose, plain and simple.

Ida Ljungquist was only there Saturday, she was wearing a tight knit blue dress that made her curves stand out like a Show magazine pictorial. Wow! She said she’s living in L.A. now.

Juliette Frette’ looked fantastic both days. She said her book is still pending, who knows with the publishing industry when it will be done and published. She likes her job as one of the Women’s Issues Examiner at www.examiner.com and most of her readers seem to be men. Haahaha, you don’t say. I think she’s a great writer for that site.

Ava Fabian was next to her looking stunning. She was telling me about her family’s background (Italian/Greek) and her grandfather getting to this country. She says that now she is one of the people who coordinates events at the Mansion.

Tiffany Taylor may now be my favorite Playmate of all time. Tied, at least. Not only is she perfectly beautiful but she’s so nice! I mentioned her neck (whiplash) and hoped it was better and we got to talking about my roommate who has the same problem (neck pain, migraines, fatigue, thyroid, etc.) and Tiffany gave me a bunch of advice to give her, including phone numbers for two doctors she’s used. She didn’t have to do that, I can’t thank her enough. If she’d wanted Hairball dipped in molten bronze to use as the base for a floor lamp he would have never made it out of that room, laws be damned.

There were a few models there who really stood out. Nikita Esco http://www.modelmayhem.com/20216 said she’s half Chinese, half French, she had the most amazing eyes, like she could be Kristin Kreuk’s sister. Been modeling for 5 years, mostly the tuner car scene, wants to branch out. There was some modeling show on a stage at the back that included Charlie Kristine and Alexah Adams, two stunning blondes and all the models were wearing some really sexy outfits by Hoss International. He’ll make anything you want and his creations will make any girl look out of this world.

Missed a lot of Playmates due to time and money. Brande Roderick looked stunning as always, Christi Shake looks like she lost about 15 pounds, looked fantastic and had her hair dyed more of a wine color (vs. last GC being more red), Kathy Shower is another woman like Deanna who just stays beautiful, Angel Boris looked as good as she ever has, Michelle McLaughlin had subtle but hot look, I wish I’d had a third day there. I think Hiromi was the only real no-show and she was sick so that was understandable.

This was, minus the repeated shocks from a few Playmate’s rates, a great show. Lots of new (to me) Playmates, some that I hadn’t seen in a while, almost all the non-Playmate models were attractive, too. It was great talking to/seeing the PMLers (Dan, Hairball, Peggy, Doug, Eric, etc.), I learned a lot about photography that I didn’t expect to hear, I’m glad I live in this city, that’s for sure.

Alfred.

Glamourcon 48 Review

Usually I like to take at least a week to digest everything before I write my review, but this year I could spit it all out right away. I just want to say that these events are no longer Playboy centric, or more correctly Playmate centric. I was shocked that a lot of the attendees have little knowledge of the Playmates that showed up, I remember one actually went up to 2000 PMOY Brande Roderick and asked what her name is? Compare this to the other models at the show such as Jasmine Mai and Ashlee Ricci who is a daughter of a Playmate, the Playmates seem to be reduce to a sideshow especially this year with the addition of a runway fashion show. I remember when Playboy use to rule these events especially when Hef and the Girls Next Door would show up.I’m starting to wonder when the car show models and fetish models will totally takeover Glamourcon? The funniest thing I saw at the show was when I ran into Lorrie Menconi when some by-passers had no idea who she is and she has to explain that she is Ashlee’s mom.

I don’t think that there was a shortage of Playmates this year though, in fact I think there was more at least the same as in previous shows. But without an Alison Waite, Lindsay Vuolo, Nicole Voss, Jennifer Walcott or Lauren Michelle Hill it seems to be a bit dull compared to past shows. First of all, I never cared for older Playmates, they rarely age gracefully, however, I have to admit that Cathy St. George still look hot and Laura Misch from the last show was the only one I ever find attractive at her age. I mean maybe when I’m older and Lauren Michelle Hill is older, I would go back to thinking how hot she once was, but she is obviously not going to be the same. This was exactly the reaction I got when I saw Lisa Marie Scott, I thought she still looks good but she just doesn’t do it for me anymore.

One of the thing that really pist me off was the overcharging by a few of these Playmates. I remember when the economy was better, they use to charge $15 for a signed headshot and 3 for $30 and now they are all $20 each with no discount (except for Grace Kim who charged $30 for 2, but if I recalled she charged 3 for $30 or something the last time). Also, a few of them were charging $20 for a picture with them which is ridiculous. I thought that even $10 was a bit much for the current economy, but most were kind enough to charge $5. I could understand Brande charging a bit more because she is a PMOY, she still looks amazing and she’s been in a few movies, but what have Christine Smith done lately? Juliette Frette is always a sweetheart to me, but she charged me $20 a picture with her and she was hunting down people who took an extra shot of her.

Kimberly Phillips who came in unannounced and is one of my favorite in 2009 also charged $20. I have to excuse Kimberly though, she had no idea how the pricing at these events work and she sat right next to Christine Smith who I thought was the worst in overcharging, so she thought that was the standard price. I thought if she had sat next to Grace Kim or Kayla Collins instead, she might have charged $5 instead. But hopefully she knows better next time. I remember how outrage I was when Hope D. charged like $30 a picture with her at the last show, she scared everyone away especially when she had nothing to sell too, it shows because she didn’t even return the next day.

Kelley Thompson the current Playmate charged $15 but she looks great so at least I thought it was worth it. Pennelope Jimenez and Vanessa Gleason both charged $10, which I’m okay with but I thought Pennelope was starting to show some age this time. (I apologize to the Pennelope fans out there, but I’m just saying as it is, because I thought she didn’t look her best).

Michelle McLaughlin was only charging $5, but she was texting on her Blackberry on both days and it seemed like she rather be somewhere else. I kinda wonder why she showed up if see didn’t want to be there. I feel like her attitude prevented her from a lot of business, because everyone avoided her. I walked by a few times and I noticed no one even talked to her as most were either talking to Kayla or her other neighbor. As for Heather Rene Smith, what a good sport, she was sick as a dog and she told me she injured her rips but she still showed up both days. As sweet as she is, I feel like her looks are fading fast tough, everytime I see her she looks worse, even when she’s not sick. I feel like she could still look like a doll if she get some rest. I personally think she hasn’t slept since she’s been Playmate, and it looks like her fading looks is a combination of too much partying and drinking and lack of sleep.

If Heather Rene was aging fast then she should get some advice from Tiffany Taylor and Deanna Brooks, the two ageless wonder. Maybe they found the fountain of youth, but these two look hotter than some girls that just pose. Deanna Brooks was also very nice and sweet too, it seems that she looks good and feel fantastic, life must be good to her.

As for Kara Monaco, she looked great but I liked her more when she has longer hair. She was nice and she laughed at my jokes when I made a comment about her use to being Cinderella at Disney World. Also she charged only $5 for a picture with her, which makes me wonder if she charged $5 than how could Christine and Juliette think they could charge $20.

The highlight of the show for me was Grace Kim. Last year she looked terrible, not her fault though, she was very sick. But what bothered me the most last year was not her being sick but her terrible choice of an outfit. Those tight jeans brought out her skinny chicken legs, but this year she looked fabulous in a loose fitting dress. I was suggesting that she wore something like that in last year’s review, maybe she read it and took my advice. (Yeah, in my dreams though.) Not only did she looked stunning, but she was very nice and talkative.

As for my thoughts on the rest of the show, I want to say that I am really happy to see that there is finally a table for Cyber Girls and PB Special Editions models. Amanda Corey who was on Beauty and the Geek and featured twice on Playboy and also in the SE magazine was just adorable and she was a sweetheart and easygoing. Tess Taylor who is the current CGOM was also there, I wanted to tell her that I’m not a fan of her tattoos, but she is very sweet and I really think she’s a darling and I don’t want to be a jerk and say something negative about her to her face. All of these girls charged a very reasonable price, $5 for a picture with them and only charged $15 for a signed photo. I think the Playmates should take a note of this, because Amanda is nothing less than a Playmate, after all she’s a semi-celebrity, she’s a winner in a reality show even if no one was watching. I hate to pick on Christine Smith, but I want to reiterate the question “why is she worth $20 a picture with her?”

Also Sara Stokes from the Hot Housewives edition looked very hot and elegant on the second day with a sexy black dress. I wonder where her husband is, but man is she gorgeous?

Andrea Lowell from Playboy Radio on Sirius is always my favorite person at the show, we’re like old friends everytime we see each other. She was doing her show on Saturday and I think it will air Monday, but we still found time to catch up and talk in between recordings. She is the most easygoing and the nicest person I’ve ever met.

Finally, a shot out to Hairball and Alfred, good to see you guys again. It’s always nice to see the Glamourcon diehards at these shows. Sorry for sounding like a cheapskate for bringing up pricing in these reviews, but the economy is still bad and I want these shows to be more fan friendly by being affordable and let our dollar go a little further.

LA-GC #48

While this upcoming show does not have many GC first-timers (Karen
Velez, Stacy Arthur, and Kelley Thompson [Sun]), #48 does present some
great opportunities for fans and collectors. For one thing, the
following playmates will be making, according to my records, their
first GC appearances in LA: Cheryl Bachman, Candace Collins, Sylvie
Garant, Patti McGuire, and Kathy Shower. So, if you only go to LA
Glamourcons, that makes eight first-timers for you. Not bad!

incredibly, eight PMOYs are scheduled for this show: India Allen (88),
Julie Cialini (95), Ida Ljungvist (09), Patti McGuire (77), Kara
Monaco (06), Brande Roderick (01), Kathy Shower (86), and Karen Velez
(85). For collectors, a cool intersection occurs with the last two:
Kathy is the centerfold in Karen’s PMOY issue. Now, how can anybody
pass up that PMOY quinella at the same show!

If this weren’t wonderful enough, three playmates are making return
appearances after being away for a long, long time: India Allen, Debra
Jensen, and Julie Woodson.

Then there are fan favorites like Deanna Brooks, Vanessa Gleason,
Marketa Janska, Hiromi Oshima, and Lisa Marie Scott; the last hasn’t
been to GC in five years (will there be a sighting of BA at the altar
of his little goddess?).

I suppose everyone has his or her own reasons for attending
Glamourcon, but just being in the same room with about forty playmates
representing every decade of the magazine’s long history, from Miss
March 1954 to Miss November 2009, should be reason enough.

See ya at the show!
